  • Manufacturing of high-strength aluminium parts by forming under quenching conditions

    (Third Party Funds Single)

Modern material lightweight constructions are characterized by the substitution of conventional materials by high-strength steel and aluminum alloys, as these enable a dimunition of the blank thickness due to the high specific strength and thus contribute to the reduction of CO2-emissions in vehicle operation. Since these high-strength materials exhibit limited formability, the need for technologies that enable the processing of these grades efficiently, increases. One promising approach to manufacture complex, high-strength components is forming under quenching conditions. This thermomechanical processing method consists of a heat treatment and a quenching realized by the tool during the forming process. Focus of this research project is the processing of high-strength, precipitation-hardenable aluminum alloys, which are characterized by a high yield strength and tensile strengths of up to 600 MPa. The aim is to identify a robust process window for these materials based on experimental and numerical data for the manufacturing of high-strength components.
