Materials Characterization and Modeling
Numerical process design and optimization based on the finite element method are used for an efficient and precise method development. Their effectiveness is closely linked to the quality of the used material models and parameters. The objective of the group Materials Characterisation and Modelling is thus to investigate novel approaches for the experimental characterization, parameter identification, modelling and simulative validation of modern materials. This results in characteristic values and modelling approaches that enable a realistic depiction of the elastic-plastic material behavior in the numerical process simulation. In order to determine the onset of yielding, the hardening behavior and the failure as a function of temperature, strain rate and anisotropy, innovative testing methods are developed and used, such as a tool for carrying out strain-rate-controlled hydraulic bulge tests at elevated temperature, a high-speed testing machine and a sheet metal test rig for the temperature-dependent determination of forming limit curves. The determination of characteristic values is predominantly focused on the application areas of sheet metal and bulk forming, but is not limited to these and can be used for a variety of different technologies.
