Forming and joining of semitubular self-piercing rivets made of high-strength steel with adapted mechanical properties and numerical analysis of the process chain

Project Status: Active

Joining is an important method of production engineering, for which reason the efficiency of such manufacturing processes is highly relevant. Self-piercing riveting is a mechanical joining process, using a rivet as auxiliary element to join two or more sheets. This makes it possible to join dissimilar materials and to realize multi-material design. However, the rivet production is a complex process, including the steps hardening and coating in order to achieve adequate strength and corrosion resistance. The use of high-strength materials, such as pressure-nitrided steels, shows a huge potential concerning the reduction of production steps since the conventional hardening and coating steps are not necessary anymore. Presently, pressure-nitrided steels are rarely used in cold bulk forming due to the high tool loads, which is a major challenge for the manufacturing process.

The objective of the research project is to investigate the rivet production process as well as the joining process using semitubular self-piericing rivets made of high-strength steel in regard to the influencing factors on the joint strength. The LFT is working on this project in collaboration with the Laboratory for material and joining technology (LWF) at Paderborn University. At the LFT, the project focus is on the development of the tools for rivet production and on the simulative design of the production process including subsequent experimental validation. By choosing a suitable forming strategy and rivet geometries the mechanical properties of the joint are to be adapted.
