Metal Forming
The lecture metal forming at the Institute of Manufacturing Technology provides basic knowledge regarding different processes of bulk and sheet metal forming. At the beginning fundamentals of material science and theory of plasticity, tribology and accuracy are being discussed, as these are the basics for an understanding of the processes. Next different bulk forming processes - upsetting, forging, rolling, extrusin and drawing - as well as sheet forming processes - cutting, bending, drawing - are being introduced. Using schematic diagrams and sample parts focus is placed on the needed forces and work, force-displacement-diagrams, tensions in the forming zone, characteristics and limitations of the processes, workpiece and tool materials, the machine tool, lubrication and the achievable accuracy. Besides introducing the standard processes also special technologies as well as todays trends are adressed. Exercises are included within the lecture to practice the application of the gained knowledge to forming related questions.
