Increasing the Planning Certainty of Manufacturing Systems in Sheet Metal Processing

The manufacturing result in sheet metal bending depends on many influences which reduce the achievable. Therefore calculating tolerances and production planning with respect to the tolerances is important in sheet metal bending. Within this research project a Monte-Carlo simulation system has been developed that provides reliable statistic information about the accuracy that can be achieved in a planned sheet metal bending production. The simulation system modifies the workpiece geometry model starting with the blank. It uses probability distributions and measured data characterising the performance of the company?s machine tools in order to calculate the workpiece geometry after every processing step. The effects of error propagation are taken into account. By evaluating large quantities of calculated geometries statistic statements about the expected percentage of workpieces coming up to requested dimensions can be made. By comparing different manufacturing plans the manufacture can be optimised with respect to the coming up to dimensions.
